Beating the Heat with a Water Table

Water tables are a genius idea for summer. They’re outside, they’re fun, they’re wet, and possibly kids are learning math or something while they’re playing. (Let’s just say they are!) Gretchen from Boxy Colonial used scrap wood and an inexpensive cement-mixing tray to create her own backyard water table. The intended kiddo was pretty pleased with the results!

After thinking about it, Gretchen decided that her toddler “needed TWO of them, so that he could dump water from one to another and so that sometimes one could be a sand table.” Luckily, she had enough leftover 2×6 boards from another project to build two frames. She used smaller wood pieces to create triangular braces for holding up the trays within the frame. Once the frame was complete, she sanded, stained, and added two coats of polyurethane to protect the wood. They are a big hit, so it’s a good thing she built two!
