Kathy from The Salvaged Boutique had this secretary desk in her pile of “things to be refinished”. A small accent table in a pizza shop restroom with a diamond-patterned top caught her eye, so she snapped a photo and used it as inspiration for the secretary makeover.
She painted the exterior of the desk with cream colored chalk paint, and the interior with black milk paint. She taped off a diamond checked pattern on the outside of the desk surface and painted the pattern with the same colors. The finishing touch was the addition of upholstery tacks where each diamond met, giving the desk front an interesting tufted look. Impressive!

The old secretary desk that Reeves of The Weathered Door had was bland and scratched up. It needed a new finish and a little somethin’-somethin’ to give it a second chance.
Reeves decided to liven things up with a fresh coat of paint in ombre shades. She chose a bright green and worked from there. Now this stuffy old desk is as fresh and young as can be!
Reeves has more info on this desk at The Weathered Door, plus some great tips for how to make a little paint go a long way.
Kristy from 4 the love of WOOD had a big challenge on her hands with his secretary desk that was handed off to her. It was plagued with a broken drawer, ink stains, and holes punched throughout.
Kristy’s work shows just how handy she is when it comes to revamping vintage pieces. To address the broken top drawer, Kristy moved up the bottom drawer, cut off the desk bottom, and then added some lovely ball and claw legs. The transformation is pretty astounding!

Kristi from Addicted 2 Decorating got this old secretary desk from a neighbor. Kristi’s vision for this piece demonstrates her extraordinary ability to think outside the box. It not only qualifies as one of her favorite DIY projects but also landed her a feature in the New York Times. Now that’s impressive!
Being a feline lover, Kristi transformed the desk into a cat pet station complete with storage space, food and water dishes, and a cozy bed. Kristi loves that this piece is both “pretty AND practical.” If I were a cat, I would definitely want to go live with Kristi!

Ann Marie from Twice Lovely was on her way to the pool with the kiddos when she screeched to a sudden halt. Nope, it wasn’t because she realized she’d forgotten the sunscreen. Her neighbor was in the process of moving an old secretary desk to the curb. It definitely had potential beneath the hideous faux wood grain paint job.
Ann Marie snatched that baby up and brought it home to be renewed. Drawing inspiration from pieces with metallic finishes, Ann Marie painted the desk silver and then added a glaze to deepen it a bit. The finishing touch was the scrolling detail Ann Marie hand painted. Ann Marie was so right when she said, “You don’t always get what you pay for.” Thanks to her own creativity and handiwork, she got waaay more!
