Sprucing Up a File Cabinet with Fabric

At Weekend Craft, Michelle’s craft supplies were starting to exceed the storage space she had available.  She was thrilled to be gifted a hand-me-down file cabinet, but before she filled it with crafting goods, the cabinet needed a makeover!

The first step in sprucing up this metal file cabinet was removing all of the stickers from it.  Michelle picked a pretty fabric, and decoupaged it onto the front of the file drawers.  She painted the rest of the cabinet with “oops” paint that luckily matched the fabric beautifully!  Michelle’s efforts resulted in a beautiful piece of furniture that she’ll be able to enjoy making a part of her craft space.

  1. what a fun idea. I have a question re: paint. will this paint chip or scratch easily? I didn’t see notes about using primer.

also have a suggestion. We have a food pantry located in a generously donated space. To protect the floors, my husband purchased a small furniture dolly to set the file cabinet on to protect the floors from rust and scratches. He said you could put a “frame” with casters attached for about the same cost.

    1. I like the idea of adding a frame with casters. Click over to the original post and see if there are more details about the paint, there. If not, I’m sure you’ll be able to find contact info there to ask the blogger directly.

  2. I really love this…next time I see a large one at Goodwill I might have to get it. I would also want wheels on the bottom of it. Great idea and so pretty!
