When Shannon from AKA Design + Life originally found this chest on the side of the road three years ago, she was thrilled to have it for extra storage. After a coat of white paint, it began service as a place to store office files.
Eventually, Shannon decided that the chest/bench was going to be a permanent fixture in their home, and as such deserved a makeover. She painted the chest again, this time using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. She created a pretty transfer using the definition of “nest”, and applied it to one side of the chest. She gave the whole thing a light sanding, and created a distressed look on the edges using dark wax and finishing paste. Shannon recently found another filing option, so the chest has gone down to the basement family room to pull double duty as a coffee table and blanket storage. “Since we picked it up off the curb, the abuse it gets from our kids and their friends down here really doesn’t matter. It’s a tough little thing. And super functional,” she says. And it looks great, too!
